Your first dance as a newly wed couple is immensely special: even if the whole crowd is watching, it’ll feel like it’s just you two on the floor. As spectators, this is one of our favorite parts of weddings. It’s so romantic, intimate, and emotional, even for the guests watching. We’ve come up with a few ideas to make this dance unique and really showcase the moment.
Skip the classics: dance to your favorite song
We love Etta James’ “At Last” no doubt… but maybe there’s a song that you two love or holds more meaning. This is your day and tailor the dance to your guys’ life. Music has a way of taking us right back to a memory – find your song that sings to your heart and you won’t regret it.
Live acoustic version of your first dance song
Have a wedding singer? A friend that sings? How incredibly special would it be to have your first dance be to a completely unique live version of your wedding song.
We’ve seen it before: add in a fog machine near the floor for dreamy and almost fantastical effect. It’s romantic, soft, and will definitely wow your guests.
Uplighting is the environmental lighting that can change colors, shapes, etc. Not all venue spots offer this but many DJs offer lighting options to help add an ambiance to the mood. Consider changing your uplighting for the first dance to literally shift the mood in the room. Try going for a soft pink or something different than your wedding colors.
Work with a professional
For those of us who are a little nervous about dancing or even want to brush up on some skills, we recommend connecting with a dancing professional. Many dance centers offer first dance lessons – do a little local research and find a class that feels right for you and your fiance.
